I picked up a jar of "Puttanesca Sauce" from Trader Joe's several weeks ago because (a) I've never seen this type of sauce before and wanted to try it and (b) I was stocking up on pasta sauce, so buying this seemed like a good idea at the time. Here is what the jar looks like:

All I have to say is good thing I only bought one jar.
After I boiled and drained my tortellini, I added it to the pan which was heating up the sauce. Everything looked so delicious! With a small touch of basil and parmeseam cheese, I was starting to feel quite proud of myself for spending more than 3 min. in the kitchen making the meal.
Then I served myself a bowl and went back to my office to study. I took a bite and I'm not kidding you when I say I almost vomitted. Something tasted fishy. FISHY!! Denial is not just a river in Egypt; I kept eating it, certain that I would develop the taste quickly. That did not happen. My friend called and I told her about this, and she jokingly said, "maybe there are anchovies in it."
I was still in denial. After my 4th bite, I gave up and decided to look up the ingredients:
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1 cup finely chopped onion
- 6 cloves minced garlic
- 2 (28-ounce) cans Roma plum tomatoes, broken into pieces, with juice
- 1 cup tightly packed, pitted, and halved Kalamata olives
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons drained capers
- 2 tablespoons minced anchovy fillets (about 8 fillets)
- 1/2 teaspoon dried crushed basil
- 1/2 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper flakes
No where on the jar did it say anything about anchovies! All I see is "Made with Italian Tomatoes"...do "Italian Tomatoes" = anchovies?! I didn't think so!
As if I needed another reason / execuse to have Chick-Fil-A for dinner!
Yuck! That is nasty! I would be so disappointed! It was awesome seeing you last week! Thanks again for letting us stay with you! I only wish we had had more time to hang around! Have a great week, Ms. DIAZ!!!!
